Guinea Pig Pelt | Large
Bark-tanned guinea pig pelt. Large. Discount reflects that I am still practicing bark tanning. Really happy how this one came out.
approximately 30(L)20(W)cm.
Guinea pigs were donated to me after they had gotten out and were free-ranging and had gone under a property fence. Unfortunately a dog was able to reach them and killed them. I salvaged everything I could.
I have trimmed the pelt around the tears and the holes. A bit of an unusual item, but it's no different from tanning a rabbit's pelt. Bark tanning uses tannins in the tree to convert skin to leather.
It gives the leather a brown colour, and they are a bit stiffer than chrome tanning. Bark tanning is completely natural, using the items I find in nature; therefore, it is more environmentally friendly and can be disposed of back to nature, unlike chrome tanning.
I switched my tanning method because of having to deal with chemical wastewater from the chrome tan solution. Bark tanning is an ancient method, and although all are derived from nature, it is highly durable, wash-safe (cannot be reversed) and should last a lifetime if treated with love and care.
