Restored and articulated horse foot showing the P1, P2, & P3 bones (long pattern, short pattern, coffin & navicular bone).

These items were part of a retired display laid out flat (not articulated) or cleaned for an estimated 20+ years.

They were imported to me directly from the new owners of the retired building for agricultural display in Poland.

Without any further context given to me, these horses seem to be older, as the collateral cartilage on the sides of the coffin bones has ossified, and this is known as sidebone. Older horses are more prone to sidebone; however, younger horses may be at risk through consistent work on hard surfaces, improper balance due to poor hoof care, and sometimes genetic factors.

The story of these horses is unknown.

The breeds are also unknown.

I have degreased and cleaned these pieces as much as I could without wearing down the bone itself (the conditions the bone was stored in previously are unknown, and I like to tread lightly when working with bones of an unknown history) and articulated them. I used epoxy resin to reinforce strength.

This piece will stand against the back of a shelf or with something small such as a block of wood or bone propped under the coffin bone (see pictures).
